Enchanted River

Hinatuan, Surigao Del Sur

Hiding in the rocky mountains of Hinatuan, Surigao Del Sur, is an eye-candy deep spring water called “The Enchanted River”. Its crystal clear waters with fascinating shades of jade, aquamarine, sapphire, royal blue and midnight blue is a must-see for tourists. However, the spectacular moment that any tourist should see is the “feeding time” or more like a feeding frenzy! When the clock strikes 12 p.m., the caretaker rings the bell and asks everyone to get out of the water to give way for the swarm of hungry fish that seem to come out of no where, beating each other for food!

The Enchanted River looks like a big hole in the ground. From the surface, you can gauge where its deepest because of the transition of shades from light to darkest blue. The Enchanted River is believed to be 90 feet deep. A series of expeditions had taken place since 1999, but the river’s depth remained a theory and many areas of it remained unexplored.

According to folklore, the Enchanted river is truly enchanted as it is guarded by “engkantos” (fairies) and other supernatural beings, which act as its protectors. Locals said that despite the healthy fish population in the river, you can only catch fish if you ask permission from the spirits.
